Julie is a Licensed Associate Counselor and National Certified Counselor with a MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a PhD in Social Psychology from Rutgers University. She provides individual and family counseling for older children, adolescents, and adults and has experience working with anxiety, ADHD, chronic pain/illness, complex and developmental trauma, depression, family communication and boundary problems, issues related to gender and sexuality, OCD, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, self-harm, and substance abuse.
Julie works to foster a meaningful therapeutic relationship with each of her clients and views this connection as a critical factor in promoting growth and change. She is dedicated to providing her clients with a safe space, and emphasizes the importance of collaboration, flexibility, open-mindedness, and non-judgmental empathy. Although she draws upon evidence-based treatments such as acceptance and commitment therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and narrative therapy when indicated, she believes strongly that there is no one size fits all when it comes to therapy, therefore she tailors her approach to her client's individual needs and unique goals. She is dedicated to helping empower her clients to achieve a rich and meaningful life.
Julie is passionate about learning and staying up to date on the latest research. She has extensively studied and written about the neurobiology of trauma, mental health, addiction, and chronic pain as well as the interpersonal and sociocultural factors that can shape individual well-being and group functioning, and she uses this knowledge to inform her treatment approach. She has a particular interest in trauma and addiction and is certified as a Clinical Trauma Specialist by the Trauma Institute International, maintains active memberships with the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) and the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), and is currently conducting research on factors that contribute to long-term recovery from substance abuse. She has completed additional training in mindfulness and anxiety, internal family systems, and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy.
